Over the last year a clay lichen colony has gradually appeared on the interior brickwork of Siobhan Davies Studios.

Whilst researching natural lichen, ceramicists Alison Proctor and Phoebe Cummings developed ways of creating lichen pieces from unfired clay which have slowly emerged in the cracks and pock marks of the Victorian walls.

The fragile nature of lichen - one of the oldest forms of plant life - is reflected in how the clay forms delicately cling to the interior brickwork of the Victorian walls. The clay was collected from Clare Twomey’s ceramic installation Is it madness. Is it beauty for Siobhan Davies Dance’s ROTOR, 2010. The lichen colony encourages us to perceive the slow and often overlooked changes that subtly occur in our natural surroundings.

In time, this clay will be handed on to another maker giving the material a continued life and evolution.
