This event marks the end of the year-long project Notes on Gesture, conceived by artist Jeremy Millar, alongside the development of our new work material / rearranged / to / be. It allows a consideration of some of its themes and influences.

The expression of the body through posture and gesture is explored through works both old and new, including a performance-reading by Holly Pester, and screenings of the seminal films A Study in Choreography for Camera (1945) by Maya Deren — on 16mm — and Chris Marker’s seminal La Jetée (1962).

Marker’s film, with both its catalogue extraordinary hand gestures, and its representation of death, provides a richly-dark context for a discussion between Millar and the acclaimed psychoanalyst Darian Leader, whose recent books include Hands: What We Do With Them — and Why (2016), and The New Black: Mourning, Melancholia, and Depression (2008). ‘Biscuits to Prevent Sadness’, based upon a recipe by the twelfth-century German abbesse and mystic Hildegard von Bingen, will also be served.

Free entry, booking is required.
